Refrigerated food transport: 100% electric and bio-CO2

Refrigerated food transport: 100% electric and bio-CO2

Based on this need, the synergy between an Italian supermarket chain and SIAD developed, resulting in the first truck in the fleet 100% electric and with a bio-CO2 refrigeration system.

In this case study, we go into detail about the technology developed to ensure the maintenance of the cold chain along the entire food chain and the benefits of the brand.

The Client

At the heart of the synergy with SIAD, an important player in large-scale food retail with outlets covering the entire centre of northern Italy and beyond.

The brand has always been committed to the values of sustainability and is constantly committed to experimenting with new organizational models and technological solutions that can reduce the environmental impact as much as possible.

Its requirements

The project involved further optimising an already environmentally friendly vehicle: a traction unit with an electric motor, acting on the cold compartment.

SIAD’s intervention.

The project provided for the creation of a first 100% sustainable vehicle, given by the combination of the 100% electric engine and the cooling of the cargo compartment with an innovative technology based on natural gases, an ecological alternative to fluorides.

SIAD’s solution is COOOL® FreeToGo, the technology that harnesses the cooling power of CO2 R-744 for refrigerated transport on rubber: it travels at low energy costs and provides a compressor-free refrigeration circuit.

COOOL® FreeToGo allows you to convert conventional means of transport into more efficient vehicles with cooling systems able to bring down the temperature about ten times faster than conventional vehicles, keeping it steady during the journey.

The results obtained

The supermarket chain today has in endowment the first means of the fleet 100% electric and CO2 eco-circular transport, with tailor-made transport that is fully efficient in terms of consumption and emissions.

A solution that does not fit any compressor, besides being quiet, does not in any way impact the mileage.

In addition to the performance related to the cooling speed, the optimization also concerns the maintenance of the temperature, with smaller thermal fluctuations, in full respect of the cold chain.
